For your discretion
I’ll leave it to your discretion but I will give you one check point for your inner motivation from the book of proverbs :
Do not wear yourself out to get rich;
do not trust your own cleverness.
Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone,
for they will surely sprout wings
and fly off to the sky like an eagle.
For me, personally, I have chosen to work only on software that I am confident that it is a real profit to others – For their work or for their life. This way I get three things in one shot – I am happy with my job, I am happy that I continue to learn and become more skillful and earn good money by doing it.
I find the following valuable :
- The word of the Lord that sets the right perspective for all others : The parable of the sower
- Jeff Lieder and his great review of software developer career management courses parts 1, 2 and 3.
- Cory House courses on pluralsight and companion site.
- Dan Appleman courses on pluralsight
- John Sonmez
Start with Jeff Lieder
s review in order to get the big picture then continue with Dan Applemans courses in order to see some of your learning mistakes then with Cory House course and at the end with John Sonmez.
Like Jeff Lieder mentioned there is no favorite option because they partially overlap but give different perspectives and different insights based on their experience/bias/expertise. I find all them useful.
I find Dan Appleman the most balanced.
Explore, think, think twice and start practicing.
Update and conclusion after watching and practicing all the materials
I can add one more video from John Sonmez posted on Youtube which I am sure you will find very good.
After I read all the emails/materials from John Sonmez, watched the pluralsight courses from Cory House and Dan Appleman I can summarize that the essence of them all is contained in words of Jesus from Matthew 7:12 and again Matthew effect in 25:29
So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
How come? You can “literally” hear them saying it again and again. You have to work hard and give hard if you want to be an outlier, well paid and satisfied in your . The materials are valuable because they can give you very detailed picture (aka analysis) of the ways you can apply the words of Jesus to the profession of Software Developer and achieve better results. The synthesis part that must follow the analysis part is the missing part.
Where is it? The missing part is on the other side of the screen – we developers should apply it. So, if you want improvement then practice. Of course you can achieve a lot even with other type of motivation. But the end results, 20 years from now, will be quite different.
